Garden & the Alder Trail

Coolish fall day, but mostly sunny. 5 mallards flew out of the south pond when I went down to the garden. Will have to up their cracked corn ration.

The fall/ever-bearing raspberries are coming on, at least in the original raspberry garden patch.

The Akane apples are getting nice color. Wondering if it’s time to taste test them?

Down in the delta garden (by the south pond), I cut all the leaves off of an overgrown kale plant. Now I will have to wash and steam it this evening, Then into the freezer. I also picked some small carrots and zucchini for a salad, with the lettuce that I picked yesterday.

Out by the old greenhouse/outhouse, I cut 3 more flowers for the window sill flower gallery.

Sat under the oldest homestead apple tree and drank a cup of iced coffee (left-over from yesterday, kept in the fridge).

The dogs and I headed out to walk the Vine Maple section of the trail.

Unfortunately, Cucu ran over to the neighbors, who were out with their dogs loose. I could hear them yelling at Cuca to go home, so I called her back and we turned around and did the alder trail.

Flower Gallery

I finally got the flowers I picked yesterday in their vases. My flower arranging is each flower has its own vase, though I am branching a bit and sometimes putting several of the same flower in the same vase.

I line the flowers along the window sill by the bed, which is where I also ‘sit,’ leaning against a pile of pillows for my back, while I work on my laptop

I saw a magazine picture of a cluster of tulips, each in its own vase, and it inspired me to try it with different flowers. I hadn’t felt like I had the flowers to make big bouquets. Also, when I have each flower by itself, I seem to be able to appreciate them more.

Lately, I have been shuffling the vases around, rearranging them to find flowers that look good together. This lets me see combinations that are blooming at the same time. I am planning to move these plants around in the gardens (any day now 😉 to have them in the same place, blooming together…

The flower gallery also inspires me to take way too many pictures of them.

Walk-about & the Fern Trail

Cloudy and cold this morning. So when the sun finally came out in late afternoon, I headed out, basket in hand. First threw out some cracked corn for the 3 mallards that are stopping by for lunch these days.

Picked a mess of beets and greens, a huge turnip and yellow zuks. I also picked flowers for the flower gallery.

Checked the bee hive and the jar of mega-bee food was nearly empty. Back inside to brew up another batch. While it cooled

Out again to the hive. After turning off the electric fence, I put the new jar of food into the top of the hive.

Continued on from the end of the meadow onto the Fern Trail. It is getting overgrown, especially with Salmon Berries, so need to take the clipper next time.

Came back into the meadow by the wood piles that Carl has split, from the trees that blew down during the winter.

Just finished eating mashed turnips with butter and salt. The turnip greens are steaming now. Putting the steamed beet greens in the freezer, but going to eat the beets over the next few day…A beet a day for the liver 😉

Flowers still in the sink waiting for their vases.

Garden Havesting

Finally uploaded my photos to the computer and will start putting some of them up today. These harvest baskets will hopefully inspire me to get back down to the garden today. I need to pick some of the various ‘greens’ that are taking over. Then to steam and freeze.
